MONSOON HAIR CARE 101- PART 2

Hi!.

Today I am back with the part 2 of the monsoon hair care series. If u haven’t read the first part you might want to look at it here  (click ). As said earlier in previous post, in this article today I will be only sharing comparatively much safer products that are available and few safer home remedies that works.

So I will be first dividing hair and scalp into three basic types that we know :

  • OILY SCALP AND OILY HAIR
  • DRY SCALP AND DRY HAIR
  • OILY SCALP AND DRY HAIR

The products suggested and home remedies recommended will be according to the hair and scalp types. Apart from that some neutral products will be suggested that will suit all hair type.

*MY HAIR TYPE: OILY SCALP AND DRY, (porous & rough) HAIR*

P.S : PRODUCTS RECOMMENDED HERE ARE ONLY MY SUGGESTIONS KEEPING IN MIND THE INGREDIENTS THAT ARE ADDED IN IT WHICH ARE SAFER THAN OTHERS.
“I do not promote any brand, I just recommend. ”

SHAMPOOS THAT I RECOMMEND FOR ALL HAIR TYPES:

  • LORD’S ARNICA SHAMPOO: This is an underrated, I believe so,  homeopathic Arnica shampoo that works equally well for most hair types. I have faced less or no hair fall even after using it without oiling my hair. I didn’t use any conditioner after it. It has got extra conditioner in it. I find it quite affordable and comfortable on hair.

  • WOW TOTAL RADIANCE ARGAN OIL SHAMPOO: This is much milder than apple cider vinegar shampoo of the same brand. This is lighter on hair though the shine is temporary.

  • Mamaearth Happy Heads Hair Shampoo 200ml with Biotin, Horse Chestnut, Bhringraj and AmlaMuch better ingredients as compared to other shampoos. It has got extracts of amla(indian goose berry), olive leaf, horse chestnut, bhringraj (false daisy)

  • Mamaearth Gentle Cleansing Shampoo for babies : If you are scared of using any shampoo but do want to try much milder shampoos than you can try baby shampoos. They are soft, gentle and also cleanses away any extra greasiness and dirt. If its safe for babies it may be safe for most adults too.

There are few other baby shampoos as well like:

  • HIMALAYA GENTLE BABY SHAMPOO
  • THE MOMS CO. TEAR- FREE NATURAL BABY SHAMPOO
  • RUSTIC ART’S BABY SHAMPOO

  • RUSTIC ART’S ALOE SHAMPOO

  • JUST HERB’S METHI SHIKAKAI SHAMPOO

  • ST. BOTANICA  ULTRA NOURISHING HAIR SHAMPOO

  • THE MOM’S CO NATURAL PROTEIN CONDITIONER

  • MAMAEARTH ARGAN HAIR MASK

1. OILY SCALP AND OILY HAIR.

Those who have this hair naturally, suffer from lot of problems. One of the reasons why the scalp is producing oil as compared to normal scalp is due to the fact that it has lot of sebaceous pores, obviously, which is very actively producing excess oils. It could be also because of hormonal imbalance, wrong products usage, weather etc etc. Some of my friends explain it as an oil tank or machine, just like their skin there is one present on the scalp, that is churning out oil every minute. While as to why some have these type of hair and scalp naturally is because of genes, yes. So the only thing you can do is manage it and take care of it.

HERE ARE SOME RECOMMENDATIONS THAT WILL HELP YOU IN TACKLING YOUR PROBLEM:

SHAMPOO:

  • HIMALAYA ANTI DANDRUFF SHAMPOO
  • THE BODY SHOP TEA TREE OIL SHAMPOO
  • SOULTREE ANTI DANDRUFF SHAMPOO
  • WOW TOTAL RADIANCE ARGAN OIL SHAMPOO
  • WOW SKIN SCIENCE APPLE CIDER VINEGAR SHAMPOO
  • RUSTIC ART’S BIODEGRADABLE CELESTIAL ROSE SHAMPOO
  • OGX ARGAN OIL OF MOROCCO SHAMPOO
  • JUST HERB’S AMLA SHIKAKAI SHAMPOO
  • JUICY CHEMISTRY BAOBAB ROSEMARY ANTI DANDRUFF SHAMPOO
  • ST. BOTANICA EUCALYPTUS AND TEA TREE OIL HAIR REPAIR SHAMPOO
  • ST. BOTANICA APPLE CIDER VINEGAR AND ARGAN OIL HAIR SHAMPOO

you can also try the other recommended shampoo in the beginning of the post.

HAIR MASK:

  • FULLER’S EARTH ( MULTANI MITTI) IS A NATURAL HAIR CLEANSER. BUT TO USE IT MAKE SURE THAT YOU USE IT WITHOUT ANY ADDITIVES LIKE CURD OR YOGURT.

Use plain multani mitti. If possible DO NOT oil your hair before using it. The reason is that in most cases multani mitti can actually not very efficiently take out the extra oil that you have applied. So use it on days when your hair and scalp is extremely oily or It can be used once a week.

  • GREEN TEA AND HIBISCUS MASK.

To make this, simmer 1tbsp of green tea in 1 cup of hot water completely. Take it down the flame when quantity of water becomes half. When it cools down add 2tbsp of freshly prepared hibiscus flower’s paste in 1tbsp of green tea water. MAKE SURE that the hibiscus that you choose is of red colour and has five petals. You can try hibiscus powder as well but make sure you get the authentic hibiscus powder without any additives like fragrance and colour. This mask helps in controlling excess oil. You can add 2-3 drops of tea tree essential oil to counteract the dandruff.

You can substitute green tea with holy basil juice or black tea.

2. DRY SCALP AND DRY HAIR

Dry scalp and dry hair can feel like straws and hay. One might feel to keep it wet always but that might increase the problem. Dry scalp can too cause dry dandruff and excessive breakage of hair fall. For this you need a good hair care routine. And products and remedies that will help in giving extra nourishment and moisture to hair.

HERE ARE SOME RECOMMENDATIONS THAT WILL HELP YOU IN TACKLING YOUR PROBLEM:

SHAMPOO:

  • JUICY CHEMISTRY COCONUT AND AVOCADO BABY SHAMPOO AND BODY WASH
  • WOW TOTAL RADIANCE ARGAN SHAMPOO
  • WOW COCONUT MILK SHAMPOO (If using this do not keep oil more than 30 mins before shampoo and do not excess oil your hair)
  • SEER SECRETS BEE POLLEN AND ORANGE PULP STRENGTH TREATMENT HAIR CLEANSER
  • JUST HERB’S ALOE VERA SILKY STRENGTH ALOEVERA WHEAT GERM MOISTURISING SHAMPOO
  • THE MOM’S CO NATURAL PROTEIN SHAMPOO
  • OGX COCONUT MILK SHAMPOO
  • ST. BOTANICA COCONUT OIL AND BAMBOO HAIR STRENGTHENING SHAMPOO

HAIR MASK:

  • COCONUT MILK CONDITIONER

When your hair is extremely dry and frizzy without even the hint of a drop of oil, use this mask. DO NOT USE ANY OIL BEFORE USING THIS.

Take out milk form grated coconut or probably buy one if you feel this is time consuming. If you wish you can buy but make sure it is unflavoured coconut cream and is fresh but then you need not to do the next step.
Squeeze the juice of half a lemon in the milk. Add 2-3 vit E capsule’s oil or vit E oil. If you have hair longer than your waist then you need around 1(around 250ml) or 1/2 cup of coconut milk.
For shorter hair adjust the amount of coconut milk.
Keep it in the fridge after stirring and mixing it nicely. Next day you will get the creamy coconut milk. Use it directly on your scalp and hair. Massage and keep it for 25 mins. You may use around 1 tsp shampoo diluted in water and use it afterwards to remove excess oil from hair. Make sure you rinse your hair well.

  • CURD AND HONEY MASK.

Take 3 tbsp curd and 2 tbsp honey. Mix it nicely and apply it uniformly all over hair and scalp. Keep it for 30 mins and wash it off using lesser amount of any mild shampoo.

DO NOT OIL YOUR HAIR BEFORE USING THIS.

3. OILY SCALP AND DRY HAIR

This type of hair can be very tricky. When you oil, your hair can become excessive oily and when you don’t it looks like hay bundle stocked over scalp. Any way I learned it hard way to manage it. Shampoos for this is similar to that of dry hair.

So I will directly suggest the hair mask.

  • FULLERS EARTH AND COCONUT MILK OR CURD.

YOU DO NOT MIX THESE TWO.

Instead apply the Fuller’s earth mixed with water all over the scalp ONLY. And use curd or coconut milk only towards the ends. Again NO OIL before using this. Use this when hair and scalp are not in balanced conditions or hair is extremely oily but hair is dry and brittle.

So these were the suggestions for different hair types. Now Here I will share the natural shampoo that will works for all hair.  But MAKE SURE to READ the required MEASUREMENTS for each hair type. Because that is the MAIN KEY to get a healthy soft hair.

THE 3-STEP HAIR CARE ROUTINE

  • 1ST STEP:

OIL. To know how to use it read a short description of it here (click  ). You can find it in bullet points.

Oil for Oily hair : JOJOBA, ALMOND, ARGAN, GRAPESEED, SESAME, etc.

Oil for Dry hair: ALMOND, OLIVE, MUSTARD, COCONUT, etc.

Apart from these recommendations you may use whatever works for you.

Do Not keep it for more then 30 mins.

  • 2ND STEP:

Dip your clean towel in warm water (make sure it is not very hot). Squeeze out water and wrap that towel around your head. Repeat this step 3-4 times.

  • 3RD STEP:

Immediately after doing this steam method, wash off your hair. Use any shampoo or the one which are recommended but I do not like to use any chemical shampoo. I have stopped using chemical shampoo ever since I started using this natural shampoo. And I have seen less hair fall and less dry friziness in hair but it all depends upon the proportions of the ingredients of this shampoo. Most of you might have guessed it already. Yes it is the same old traditional reetha- shikakai-amla shampoo (SOAPNUT , ACACIA CONCINNA AND INDIAN GOOSEBERRY)

Before you run away let me tell you that this was hated by me as well but when I learned the correct ratio to use this, I never looked back . NO, I don’t boil any thing. But make sure you use the authentic powders for this without any additives or chemicals or fillers. You might dry these and then powder to make the paste if you are afraid of buying adulterated products.

You also need an cast iron bowl or utensil to keep it overnight. Cast iron is preferred if you don’t have one, then normal bowls will do. Also you must keep it over night.

CAUTION: the ratio of shikakai(ACACIA CONCINNA) should be always less as compared to the other two ingredients.

OILY HAIR: 1 and half tbsp shikakai(ACACIA CONNIA), 2tbsp reetha( soapnut), 2tbsp amla(indian gooseberry). Mix these with boiled and strained rice water and keep it over night. If you don’t want to use rice water then use plain water.

DRY AND NORMAL HAIR:  1tbsp shikakai, 1 and half tbsp reetha 2 tbsp amla. If you have extremely dry and brittle hair then use 2 and half tbsp amla. Use boiled and strained rice water or plain water to keep it over night. Next morning either use one egg white or natural aloevera gel by discarding it’s latex and grinding its gel into thin water like consistency. If natural aloevera gel causes itchiness in scalp then use shop bought aloevera gel but make sure that it is colour and fragrance free.

How to use it?

The paste might thicken up a bit next morning. Make sure to liquify it by adding aloevera or plain water. Next day apply this hair mask and keep it about 5 minutes after massaging into the scalp gently. After 5 minutes apply the rest of the paste generously all over hair strands till ends. Now wash it off by rinsing it really well.

NATURAL SHAMPOO USING LIQUID CASTILE SOAP:

You can make your own shampoo using liquid castile soap but make sure that whatever ingredients you add add it and use it immediately, don’t store it for a longer time if it is just not essential oils. You may use essential oils like tea tree, rosemary, peppermint or geranium, rose. Better do not use any other essential oil, preferably do not mix all essential oils together.

THE ACV RINSE

At times you may use apple cider vinegar to rinse your hair after shampoo and conditioning. It helps controlling dandruff, frizz and makes hair soft shiny and smooth.

Take ACV AND WATER IN 1:2 RATIO(tbsp)

FENUGREEK SEED MASK

This really helps in strengthening the roots and improving the texture of hair.

Take 2 tbsp of fenugreek or methi seeds and soak in water over night. Next morning make thick paste of it. Again do not use any oil before using it. You need not add any thing else. Just water and fenugreek. Apply it generously all over hair and keep for 30 mins. Rinse it off with mild shampoo.

The other way of using this is a little long method. But this method, even though cost you time, may improve the texture of your hair earlier than the above mentioned method. DO NOT TRY this method a day or two before any special occasion.

1st day apply this mask and rinse it off. Use shampoo only for scalps. Cons is that you may feel a bit sticky after wards but not in a way that you want to wash your hair. Wait for the next day.

3rd day oil your hair very lightly and use little amount of shampoo to wash off oil.

Next two days do not wash your hair. And you will eventually see the effect of it.

One more effective and best way is use this mask and as said only use little shampoo. Do not wash your hair for next 2 days. After 3 days you will see that your hair will feel soft and smooth.

WHENEVER USE THIS MASK MAKE SURE TO RINSE YOUR HAIR REALLY REALLY WELL. DIP YOUR HEAD IN BUCKET FULL OF WATER 4-6 TIMES TO MAKE SURE YOU GET RID OF TRACES OF FENUGREEK FROM SCALP AND HAIR NICELY. THIS WILL REDUCE THE STICKINESS.

FLAX SEED GEL:

The whole internet is probably filled with the methods to make it. This is really great for monsoon and makes hair nourished, moisturised and frizz-controlled. Prefer using it as a mask.

HAIR SERUM:

Take 2 tbsp jojoba oil or grape seed oil, mix 4 tbsp of clear aloevera gel, add 3 vit E capsules in it. Mix it well and store it in a bottle. DO NOT add any water products. Now spray rose water all over your de-tangled hair. Take out pea sized amount of serum and apply it on semi-wet hair working downwards towards hair ends. Dry scalp and dry hair people can use it on scalp. Use wooden comb later to distribute serum evenly all over hair.
